Andratx, the Gateway to the Serra de Tramuntana

Located at the western tip of Mallorca, Andratx is a destination full of history, charm, and a deep connection to nature. With just over 10,000 inhabitants, this municipality is in a privileged location, serving as one of the main access points to the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its landscape is a blend of mountains, green valleys, and a coastline dotted with crystal-clear coves, making it an ideal place for those seeking an authentic experience on the island.

What to Visit in Andratx Village

The heart of the village is the Son Mas Castle, an ancient fortress that now houses the Andratx Town Hall. From here, you can enjoy spectacular views of the valley and its surroundings. Another point of interest is the Church of Santa María de Andratx, built in 1248, which holds three impressive altarpieces dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Sebastian. Inside, you’ll find the famous “Quadre des Moros,” a painting depicting the Turkish pirate attack of 1578, a key episode in local history.

One of the most recommended walks is through the old Pantaleu district, where you can find the historic Sa Gaieta windmills, the So na Gaia tower, the Cúria, and the Contemporary Art Center in Sa Coma-Andratx. To experience the local atmosphere at its fullest, the best time to visit the village is on a Wednesday when the weekly market fills the streets with fresh products, crafts, and Mallorcan specialties.

A Natural Paradise

What truly characterizes Andratx is its stunning natural surroundings. Located at the edge of the Serra de Tramuntana, the municipality is surrounded by valleys covered in pine trees and almond trees, offering postcard-perfect landscapes year-round. To the north, the terrain is rugged and mountainous with few constructions, while to the south are the main urban centers and some of the most beautiful beaches on Mallorca

The combination of mountains, cliffs, and beaches makes Andratx an ideal destination for both hikers and those looking to relax by the sea. Every corner offers a unique view, with a mix of crystal-clear waters, hidden coves, and landscapes that invite total disconnection.

Puerto de Andratx: A Charming Corner

Puerto de Andratx, considered one of the most beautiful harbors in the Balearic Islands, is a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. Once a small fishermen’s refuge, it is now a popular tourist destination known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, marina, and exclusive boutiques and restaurants.

The surrounding coves, such as Cala Llamp, Cala Moragues, and Cala de Egos, offer crystal-clear waters and a spectacular natural setting. The harbor features a modern yacht club with over 500 moorings, attracting numerous yachts and recreational boats.

One of the most interesting spots is La Lonja, where fresh, recently caught fish is sold. A stroll along the Promenade leads to the es Saluet stream, offering a perfect walk to discover the essence of the harbor. The old defense towers, such as the Torre de Sant Carles in La Mola and another on Rodríguez Acosta Street, once protected the area from pirate attacks.

Beaches and Coves

Andratx’s coastline boasts over 20 beaches and coves, each with its own charm. Some are easily accessible, while others require a bit more effort to reach, but always with the reward of crystal-clear waters and stunning landscapes.

Among the most popular is the Playa de Sant Elm, where you can see the island of Sa Dragonera, a protected natural park. Other must-see options include Cala Blanca, Cala Conills, Cala Cranc, Cala En Fonoll, Cala Llamp, Cala Marmassen, Cala S’Algar, Playa Camp de Mar, and Playa de Ses Dones

Sa Dragonera and La Trapa

One of the most fascinating places in Andratx is the Sa Dragonera Natural Park, a small archipelago accessible by boat from Sant Elm. Its name comes from the endemic lizards that inhabit the island, and it is a perfect destination for hiking and birdwatching.

Another site of great interest is La Trapa, a valley that was transformed into a lush garden by Trappist monks over two centuries ago. It can be accessed through hiking routes from s’Arracó, Sant Elm, or the Coll de Sa Gramola, all offering spectacular views of the sea and surrounding cliffs.

Gastronomy in Andratx

The local gastronomy is another highlight of Andratx, with a wide variety of restaurants offering everything from traditional Mallorcan dishes to fusion options. Among the most recommended are Sa Societat de Ca Na Fornera, known for its Mediterranean dishes; Oliu, which blends tradition and innovation; Verico, with Italian specialties; and Umami Fresh Bistro, ideal for enjoying fresh produce and creative cuisine.
