Llucalcari: A Hidden Secret Between Rocks, Mud, and Sea

When talking about hidden coves in Mallorca, there’s one name that often escapes the more touristy maps but leaves a lasting mark on those who visit: Llucalcari. Also known as Es Canyeret, this small pebble beach located in the north of the island, between Deià and Sóller, represents the most natural, wild, and authentic side of Mallorca. A spot where time seems to stand still, and where the connection with nature becomes intimate and direct.

A Corner in the Serra de Tramuntana

Llucalcari is not just a cove. It’s also the name of a tiny “llogaret” (small village) in Mallorca, a rural settlement without its own town hall that forms part of the municipality of Deià. Its name comes from Latin and could be translated as “farmhouse of the forest,” referring to the ancient farmhouses that populated the island before the conquest of King James I. Today, only about 15 houses and a small 18th-century chapel dedicated to Mare de Déu d’Agost shape this serene and picturesque spot.

Just a few meters from this hamlet, and after crossing a peaceful pine forest, lies the most treasured gem: a cove 50 meters long and 22 meters wide, surrounded by rocks and cliffs that give it an intimate atmosphere, protected from the wind. This beach is famous not only for its beauty but for being a spot frequently visited by those practicing nudism and for those who indulge in natural mud baths formed by the pools of a freshwater spring coming from the mountain.

How to Reach the Cove of Llucalcari

Access isn’t easy, which keeps this spot safe from mass tourism. Only residents are allowed to park in Llucalcari, and during high season, parking is scarce, so it’s more advisable to walk from Cala Deià or use public transport. The path to the cove doesn’t exceed one kilometer, but it’s steep and somewhat narrow. However, those who venture along it know that at the end of the effort awaits a place of silence, tranquility, and connection with nature.

What to Do in Llucalcari

Despite its small size, Llucalcari Beach offers great rewards to those looking for unique experiences in Mallorca. Its crystal-clear and serene waters invite snorkeling or diving, although caution is needed with the rocks on the seabed. It’s a place highly valued by lovers of peaceful nautical activities, who find here one of the best spots to enjoy the sea without crowds.

With some luck, it’s even possible to spot cetaceans in this area, especially if visited in the spring or autumn months when tourism decreases, and nature shows its most generous side. And if you prefer a more relaxed plan, there’s nothing like letting yourself be carried away by the magic of the surroundings, sunbathing on the flat stones, or covering yourself in mud and letting time pass without hurry.

Dining Near Llucalcari

Although there are no services or restaurants at the cove, just a few minutes on foot, you can enjoy some very interesting dining options. In the village of Llucalcari itself, Hoposa Costa d’Or offers quality cuisine in a privileged setting. For more variety, it’s ideal to head to Deià, where some of the island’s most iconic restaurants are concentrated.

Among them stands out Es Racó d’es Teix, with its tasting menu and spectacular mountain views. For a more relaxed atmosphere, Café Sa Fonda is famous for its burgers and as a meeting point for locals and visitors. Other recommended spots include Sa Pedrissa, Café Sa Font Fresca, and Trattoria Italiana, all located within a few kilometers and offering options for all tastes.

What to See Around

Exploring Llucalcari is also a good excuse to discover two of the most charming villages in the Serra de Tramuntana: Deià and Sóller

Deià, with its stone houses, cobbled streets, and artistic atmosphere, has been a refuge for poets, painters, and musicians for decades. Writer Robert Graves lived here for many years, and his house is now a museum.

Just a few minutes by car (or by train from Palma), you’ll find Sóller, one of the most visited destinations on the island. Surrounded by mountains and bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, this town offers endless hiking routes, cultural visits, and gastronomic experiences. From its iconic square, through the wooden train that connects with Palma, to its charming port, Sóller is the perfect complement to a day of disconnection in Llucalcari
