Holy Week in Palma is one of the island’s most significant religious festivities, steeped in tradition and devotion. In 2025, the processions return from April 11 to April 20, offering residents and visitors the chance to experience one of Mallorca’s most emblematic celebrations.
Origin and History of Holy Week in Palma
Holy Week in the city dates back to the Procession of the Holy Christ of the Blood, one of the island’s most revered images. Historical records show that the Maundy Thursday procession was already celebrated in 1554, with the image of the Holy Christ of the Blood accompanied by its own brotherhood. Additionally, the General Hospital, founded in 1456 with the authorization of Pope Calixtus III, became the place where the image was venerated, establishing the foundation of Holy Week in Palma. Since 1564, the image has presided over the Maundy Thursday Procession, organized by the Brotherhood of the Blood to raise alms for the hospital.
