Discover Bellver Castle: A Historical Treasure in Palma de Mallorca

Perched atop a hill with stunning views of Palma, Bellver Castle is one of the island’s most iconic and visited landmarks. Its history dates back to the 14th century when it was built by King James II as a royal residence. Since then, this majestic castle has witnessed the evolution of Mallorca and has played multiple roles throughout the years.

A Unique Castle Design

Unlike many medieval castles, Bellver Castle stands out for its circular structure, a design that was rare in the architecture of its time. This shape not only adds an air of uniqueness but also provides greater stability. Visitors can explore its walls and towers, soaking in the rich history preserved within. From the castle, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the city of Palma, making it a perfect spot for photography.

History and Transformation

The story of Bellver Castle began in 1300 when King James II decided to build a residence that would reflect the crown’s importance and power. The choice of location was strategic, as the hill provides excellent natural defense and visual control over Palma Bay. The construction of the castle was completed in 1311, and since then, it has been a symbol of Gothic architecture in Mallorca.

In its early years, the castle served as a royal family residence and an administrative center. During the 14th and early 15th centuries, Bellver became a place of refuge during internal conflicts and succession wars. Over time, it was transformed into a prison, especially from the 18th century when many political prisoners were confined in its dark dungeons.

By the late 19th century, Bellver Castle regained its significance as a cultural heritage site. In 1931, it was declared a historic-artistic monument, and in 1936, it became the seat of the Museum of the History of the City. Since then, it has undergone numerous restorations to preserve its architectural integrity and rich history. The castle is not only a tourist attraction but also an important cultural center that hosts exhibitions and events.

The 20th century brought new opportunities for the castle. During the Spanish Civil War, the castle was used as a storage center and later as a shelter for displaced people. In the following decades, Mallorca’s tourism industry grew, and Bellver Castle became a landmark for visitors to the island.

Today, the castle is not just a place to admire the views but also a space where cultural events, such as concerts and exhibitions, are held, allowing the castle’s historical legacy to remain alive and shared with new generations.

Activities and Experiences at the Castle

Bellver Castle offers a variety of activities for visitors that go beyond simply exploring the grounds. Guided tours provide an in-depth look at the castle’s history and life in Mallorca during the Middle Ages. The guides share anecdotes and stories that allow visitors to emotionally connect with the site. Additionally, cultural events and temporary exhibitions allow visitors to engage with history in an interactive way. In the summer, the castle transforms into a venue for outdoor concerts, where music resonates between its ancient walls.

The natural surroundings of the castle are also ideal for a leisurely stroll. The gardens and trails offer picturesque routes, inviting you to enjoy a day outdoors. For nature enthusiasts, the area around the castle is rich in flora and fauna, making it a great spot for birdwatching and hiking.

Access and How to Visit

Located just minutes from the center of Palma, Bellver Castle is easily accessible for both tourists and locals. You can reach it by car, taxi, or public transport. The path leading to the castle, surrounded by nature, provides a pleasant experience before arriving at this impressive monument. The castle has extended opening hours, allowing visitors to enjoy the views at different times of the day, especially at sunset, when the sun paints the sky in warm colors.
