Discovering Colònia de Sant Jordi: A Natural Paradise in the South of Mallorca

Located at the southern tip of Mallorca, within the municipality of Ses Salines, Colònia de Sant Jordi is one of those corners of the island that perfectly balances the tranquility of its natural surroundings with the energy of a lively coastal town. Once a small fishing village, it has transformed into an attractive destination for nature lovers, sports enthusiasts, and travelers seeking authentic experiences by the sea.

A Bit of History

Although today it boasts a modern and holiday-oriented atmosphere, Colònia de Sant Jordi has deep historical roots. Evidence of settlements here dates back to the Bronze Age, and during Roman times, the area was highly valued for its salt production. In fact, an annual festival is still held every August in honor of this heritage.

Adding to its charm, this is also where you’ll find the only natural hot springs in Mallorca.

Despite tourism now being its main driving force, the village has preserved part of its traditional essence, with stone houses nestled among modern buildings and an active local community.

Beaches and Natural Surroundings

One of Colònia de Sant Jordi’s greatest attractions is, without a doubt, its proximity to some of the best beaches in southern Mallorca. The most popular is Platja d’Es Port, right next to the marina—perfect for those who like having services close at hand. But if you’re after peace and quiet, you can take a short walk to more secluded coves like Es Caragol, Es Carbó, or Ses Roquetes, known for their crystal-clear waters and unspoiled scenery.

Nearby, the Parc Natural de Mondragó is another gem for outdoor lovers—ideal for birdwatchers, nature photographers, and hikers.

We can’t forget Es Trenc, just minutes from the village. This three-kilometer stretch of white sand and turquoise water is one of the most iconic beaches on the entire island.

Even closer lies the Parc Nacional de l’Arxipèlag de Cabrera, a protected marine reserve that can be visited via boat trips. Here, you can enjoy snorkeling, diving, and hiking trails in an almost untouched environment.

Local Culture and Shopping

While the spotlight is often on the sea and nature, the village also offers a lively local scene, with a weekly market held every Wednesday where you can shop for everything from fresh produce to artisan souvenirs. It’s a great opportunity to soak up the local atmosphere and taste traditional delicacies.

Dining with a View

The culinary offering in Colònia de Sant Jordi is surprisingly diverse. You’ll find everything from traditional Mediterranean dishes to more contemporary and creative proposals.

For something different, head to NENI, where Lebanese and Israeli flavors blend with Mediterranean cuisine in a relaxed seaside setting.

Another must-visit is Sal de Cocó, the restaurant of chef Marta Rosselló, offering signature Mediterranean cuisine with seasonal ingredients and fresh fish. For wine lovers and those seeking a sophisticated atmosphere, Salma, located in Hotel El Coto, is an excellent choice with a wine cellar boasting over 400 labels.

Other favorites include Cassai Beach House, perfect for a seaside meal, and 5illes Beach & Sunset, where you can enjoy delicious tapas and live music sessions.

Excursions and Surroundings

From Colònia de Sant Jordi, it’s easy to explore other parts of southeastern Mallorca. You can take boat trips to Cabrera, visit nearby caves and coves, or tour the vineyards of Felanitx, one of the island’s most important wine regions.

Charming towns like Santanyí or S’Estanyol are also within easy reach, offering a more laid-back atmosphere and equally stunning beaches.
