Discover the Roman City of Pollentia: A Journey to the Past in Mallorca

Mallorca is known not only for its paradisiacal beaches and vibrant nightlife but also for its rich history. In the north of the island, between the bays of Pollença and Alcúdia, lies an archaeological treasure revealing the secrets of Roman life in Mallorca: the city of Pollentia. Founded in 123 BC by Consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus, Pollentia represents one of the earliest examples of urbanization on the island, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into life in ancient Rome

A Journey Through Time: History of Pollentia

Pollentia, the Roman city that marked the beginning of urban life in Mallorca, became the island’s nerve center during the Roman period. Thanks to its strategic location, Pollentia quickly thrived, extending over an area of 15 to 20 hectares. This urban boom, which occurred between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD, was reflected in its architecture and urban planning, including an advanced water supply and sewage system

The city’s grid layout, with streets oriented north-south, was typical of Roman cities, facilitating the organization of urban space. Today, the ruins of Pollentia offer a clear view of its past grandeur, with key areas like La Portella, the Forum, and the Theater still preserving their splendor.

La Portella: Ancient Residences

La Portella, one of the most prominent residential areas of Pollentia, allows us to delve into the daily life of its ancient inhabitants. This sector reveals the layout of several domus, Roman homes, and the network of streets that connected them. Among the excavated houses, the House of the Two Treasures stands out for its well-preserved structure and its central atrium, around which the interior spaces were organized.

A few steps from this house is the House of the Bronze Head, famous for the discovery of a bronze sculpture now preserved in the Alcúdia Museum. Although the Northwest House is less preserved, its foundations offer a view of the Roman wall from the 3rd century AD, a testament to the city’s fortifications.

The Forum: Heart of Public Life

The Forum was the nerve center of Pollentia, where political, commercial, and social activities took place. Opened to the public in 2002, the Forum has revealed valuable information about the city’s urban organization. Its core contains remains of the Capitoline Temple, two smaller temples, and an extensive complex of Tabernae, the city’s commercial areas.

The importance of the Forum in Pollentia’s daily life is evident in the numerous ornamental and architectural elements still visible. The square, which has been the subject of extensive excavations, provides a unique insight into the character and structure of the Roman city

The Theater: A Stage for History

The Pollentia Theater, located south of the city near the Roman port, is one of the most impressive surviving monuments. Carved into the rock, the theater takes advantage of the natural slope of the terrain for its construction. Dating from the 1st century AD, its structure includes key elements such as the cavea (seating for the public), the orchestra (the semicircular area in front of the stage), and the scena (the stage area).

Despite erosion and the passage of time, the theater retains much of its original structure. During August, the theater comes alive again with the “Agosto a la Fresca” program, which presents cultural events and performances in this historic setting.
